Mediawave's musical past and present
Founded in 1991, the Mediawave Foundation was originally created to promote visual culture, but from its second year it gradually expanded its activities to include other artistic disciplines. Our focus has been on ethnic and improvisational music, to the extent that since the early 2000s our main event has been called Mediawave International Film and Music Festival.
In the context of the Foundation's other events and sub-organisations, amongst others, our activity included yearly organization of summer art camps called "Passport Control" International Art Workshops (since 1992), sub-organisations of other festivals (since 2006) - Ördögkatlan Festival (Kisharsány), MovEast (Pécs), Alter-Native film festival (Târgu Mures, RO), Minimum Party (Kason, RO), etc.). Next to the main film profile, the musical orientation has also been emphasized in the framework of music workshops of different genres (contemporary jazz, ethno, alternative).
This year, the music workshop character will be implemented by related artists in the context of art workshops in Ravazd, where they will be encouraged to create new works and exchange experiences.
The 33-year history of the Mediawave International Film and Music Festival/Event, the regular art workshops and, most recently, the weekly programmes of the "Ravazdi parasztszalon" countryside series (since 2022), with its numerous music programmes and workshops, builds on a broad and well-established network of artistic contacts. Many subsequent initiatives from the Carpathian Basin have been inspired by the atmosphere and connections of the Mediawave Festivals established during the change of regime, such as Are You Free? Musicfestival (Dunaszerdahely), Malomfest (Orom), Fényfesztivál (Pécs), Alternative film festival (Marosvásárhely), Minimum Party (Kászon), etc. These are still our partner festivals. The films are also screened at our partner festivals throughout the year under the title Mediawave-caravan.
